A passkey that follows me — recommended. Saved to iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager, so it syncs and you can sign in from your phone, your computer and your e-reader. On a phone it saves straight to your keychain with Face ID, Touch ID or your Android lock. On a computer, pick iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager when the browser asks (Gmail users: be signed into Chrome), or choose use a phone to scan a QR code. Only on this device — Touch ID, Windows Hello or a hardware key. Faster, but you will not be able to sign in anywhere else, and losing this device means only your recovery code gets you back in.

On an iPhone: if the phone shows “Choose how to manage your passkeys”, it has no passkey store selected yet. In Settings › General › AutoFill & Passwords, tick Passwords (or Chrome) under “AutoFill From” — and if Passwords is not listed, turn on iCloud Keychain under Settings › your name › iCloud › Passwords & Keychain. Then come back here.
